Daily Foot Care

We may have a daily care regime for our face and our skin, but tend to forget our feet. Include a daily feet regime to thank your feet, which carry your weight the whole day. The feet our either stifled in socks and shoes the whole day or have to brave the elements in open sandals and foot wear. The feet are prone to problems like bunions, calluses, corn, plantar warts and even fungal and bacterial infections.

There is a lot you can do to keep your feet healthy. You can choose from over the counter products or different home remedies to keep your feet beautiful. Proper care and regular use of home remedies ensures that you get rid of the problems and also protect them from future troubles. It is always better to consult a dermatologist in case you have a bad case of infection or other troubles.

You can choose from a plethora of products available in the shops, to help you with the common feet problems. Pick up foot lotions to treat cracked and dry feet. These have essential oils like peppermint to bring coolness and freshness to the feet. Use pumice stones to remove calluses and dead skin. Loofahs and foot files can also do the trick. You can choose a lotion or cream that will work along with the stones, files and loofahs, to help make the task easier.

You can also use a foot scrub meant for removing the dead skin. A nice soak in warm water or a foot bath before you start with the stone will make it very effective. A foot bath can be very relaxing thanks to their self water heating and bubble generating ways. Use foot sprays and powders to keep your feet free of dampness and moisture when wearing socks and shoes.

Don?t forget to take care of your toe nails too. Keep them clean and trimmed properly to avoid painful in grown nails. Take good care of your feet at home, but do supplement it with professional pedicures once a month or so to keep them in perfect condition. You don?t have to visit a beauty salon for that. You can easily treat yourself at home. A pedicure includes a foot massage and a good nail and skin care treatment. With the necessary tools you can pamper yourself.

However well you may take care of your feet, one thing that can negate the whole effect is improper footwear. Shoes that are not comfortable or ill-fitting can lead to multiple problems. It is essential that you wear comfortable and well fitting footwear. It is great to stay abreast with fashionable foot wear, but should it be at the cost of your feet?s health?

Take good care of your feet. Follow a good foot care regime daily at bed time to make them beautiful, soft and tender. Regular care will ensure that they remain that way always. Choose suitable products or use home remedies to treat your feet. Pamper them with proper care and occasional pedicures.

Preventing Foot Pain

With the exception of plantar warts or trauma to the foot, checking the shoes you've been wearing is the first step in caring for foot pain.
There are many shoe wear products on the market that are designed to provide pain relief. Pain relief footwear may just be the ticket to alleviating or preventing the problems you are experiencing.

The foot is one of the least seen parts of the body and for this reason often does not receive the level of care and attention that other parts do. This can in turn lead to a variety of foot problems and the discomfort of sore feet. Here are 5 essential foot facts to be aware of when considering your foot care regime.

A callus may cause foot pain. It is a skin build-up that developed due to pressure over the bone. It is usually found on the foot's bottom, and causes pain when walking. Shoes may also cause foot pain - too loose or too tight shoes may give you incredible pain in your foot.Injury such as connective tissue wear or muscle strain can cause swelling and pain. Irritation or tearing of the foot's fascia, tendons and ligaments can cause foot pain. Walking and other activities will become difficult.

Apply an ice pack on the affected area to reduce pain and swelling. Elevating the feet will also help. Minimize your activities to give the injury time to heal. As the injury gets better, do slow stretches of the foot by rotating the ankle and pointing the toes up and down. Making the connective tissues more flexible will help reduce the risk of future irritation. Anti-inflammatory medicine will also bring relief.

Nerve damage can be a hazardous condition. This is because it is through the nerves that the brain registers sensations. Someone with nerve damage may not realize that they have an injury such as a cut or blister. If not taken care of, these minor foot injuries can develop into ulcers, and if the ulcer isn't taken care of, gangrene can develop which can lead to amputation.

When you have to walk on your feet all day the last thing you need is foot pain. It makes the day feel twice as long. It makes it hard to concentrate on work and you certainly do not feel like playing when you get off work. You just want to go home and get off your feet.

Calluses are thickened layers of skin caused by repeated pressure or friction. These are usually seen on the top or side of a toe when shoes do not fit properly. A bunion is a condition where the big toe points toward the second toe. This causes a bump on the edge of the foot that may also appear on the joint of the big toe.

Foot pain is a function of age, with the main problems being bunions, arthritic joints, poor circulation, fungal toenails, an inflammation of the fibrous tissue on the sole of the foot known as plantar fasciitis, and a thinning of the pads of fat that cushion the fibrous tissue on the sole of the foot.

Walking is Great Exercise

Walking is an easy way to be physically active. It's inexpensive and convenient.  It has many benefits:  It can increase energy and stamina, tone muscles, strengthen bones, and increase the number of calories you burn.  Walking can also lower your risk of developing health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.  Experts recommend 30 minutes a day; 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise.  Stretch gently after you warm up your muscles and again after you cool down.  Wear proper shoes and consider a good footbed and socks: You should walk with your chin up, shoulder back, and toes pointed forward.  Let your heel touch the ground first and then roll your weight forward.  Let your arms swing naturally to help get aerobic.  Start slowly at first and gradually build up time and distance over several weeks.  Consult your health care professional before beginning any exercise program or if you experience any symptoms, such as dizziness, fainting, or pains in your chest.

Diabetic Walking & Footcare

Foot health is particularly important for diabetics.  Be sure to do a foot check after each walking session and check for cuts, abrasions and blisters.  Blisters, abrasions and breaks in the skin of the feet are often hard to detect since foot numbness is one symptom of diabetes. These injuries are slow to heal and prone to infection, since another symptom of diabetes is reduced blood flow in the small blood vessels of the extremities.  Your shoes need to fit comfortably with plenty of room in the toe area. They should not rub at the heel. Some walking shoes include an extra pair of eyelets close to your ankle.  Lacing these may help prevent heel friction.  Walking shoes are different from running shoes.  Walking shoes have flatter, broader soles, which help improve balance.  A good pair of insoles can help improve your balance, too.  Check first with your podiatrist or other health care specialist before you start your walking program.

Hiking Up and Down Hills

What are the best techniques for hiking up and down hills?  Fun and active walks oftentimes take us off our flat sidewalks and out into the country and woods; we need to use good techniques when we walk there.

Up Steep Hills: The biggest mistake climbing the hills is to get up on their toes. Keep your heels down;  this will stretch out your calf muscles and Achilles tendons and reduce cramping and strains and keep your soles on the ground where they belong for more traction.  Slow down by shortening your steps, don’t try to race up the hill, slow down and enjoy the view.

Down Steep Hills: Like going uphill, shorten your stride and slow your pace. Bend your knees slightly to lower your center of gravity downward but not back. Too much leaning back and your feet will slide out from under you.  Be careful not to turn your feet at an angle to the trail; it will increase your chances of rolling over on your ankle.  Keep your toes pointed down for the best grip and stability.

Socks or No Socks with Sandals?

The great debate; do I wear socks with my sandals, or not?

If you plan to walk longer distances like 2 or 3 miles in sandals, it is helpful to wear socks with them. Socks put a comfortable barrier between the straps and your foot, reducing the risk of hot spots and blisters.  The socks can also wick moisture away from the sole of your foot to keep more dry.

Sandals are better suited for shorter walks on surfaces that don't have much litter or gravel, so if you are in gravel areas, the socks will feel better from the grit.  Sandals won’t give you the support of a shoe, though, so if you are in rugged terrain or up and down hills, stick to the shoes for better safety and support.

We are foot care professionals, not fashion experts.  If you want to know whether or not to wear socks with sandals in a fashion sense, you will have to ask a fashion expert about that : )

Flip Flop Foot Fiasco

Flip flops are easy and fun; but are they good for your feet?

Flip flops were never meant to be everyday shoes, like to school or the grocery store.  They were meant to wear in the locker room or to the pool and back.  A few steps in them and off they go; but not today.  They have become a shoe of choice and a fashion statement.

Flip flops are great for the beach as an alternative to being barefoot; but not for a day of shopping or out on a date or running errands. The problem is that flip flops offer little cushioning and no arch support, and they force you into an unnatural, toe-gripping, foot-slapping gait.  All causing unnecessary strain to your feet and body posture.

Here are some risks you take:

·         Sore arches and heels that can lead to inflamed Achilles tendons and plantar fasciitis.

·         Heel calluses from the pounding.

·         Hammer toes from the gripping.

·         Irritation between the toes from toe thongs that can lead to fungal infections.

So have fun and casual with flip flips but be careful and use sparingly.  Wear shoes with good comfortable and supportive orthotics most of the time to help your feet stay healthy.

Footcare Tips for Runners

Every runner, recreational or training for a marathon, need to care for your feet.  Here are some important tips:

1.      Stretching. Stretch before and after running.  Concentrate on the calves, hamstrings, quads and feet.

2.      Shoes. Invest in a good pair of running shoes.  Be sure they have good insoles for support and comfort.   If feet sweat heavily during running put talcum powder in your shoes to keep dry.

3.      Orthotics.  If you have arch or heel pain, get good supportive orthotics.  Ask a podiatrist or research online to find the right ones for you.

4.      Socks.  Cotton socks absorb moisture.   Make sure the seams are not in an area of pressure which can lead to a lot of pain. If you cannot find a comfortable location for the seams try turning inside out.

5.      Groom Toenails.  Cut them shorter before a race.  They should not extend past the tip of your toe and should be shaped in a straight cut.

6.      Toes.  If you have a tendency to develop corns and callouses on the tips of your toes try adding padding in your sneakers underneath your toes.

7.      Blisters. Blisters result from excessive friction between shoes and feet; good insoles will help avoid this like FootMatters stabilizer footbeds.  If you are prone to blisters apply Vaseline to problem areas prior to your run or try padded “blister proof” socks.  Also, applying moleskin to problem areas also prevents blisters.

8.    Finish Line. When the race is done . . .  Rest your feet.  Ice feet to keep inflammation and swelling down. Compress with ACE wraps to reduce swelling.  Elevate feet to help them rest up.
